Hi! I’m Mariela, I’m 18 and in 10th grade at the EFP Learning Center. I was adopted into my family when I was 11 after living at the public orphanage in San Pedro Sula for three-and-a-half years. Since coming home I have really been able to come out of my shell; mom, Allison, would say I’m a bit of an introvert. But now I enjoy meeting new people and making new friends, and am actually quite adventurous. Mom says I’m a great help with looking after my little sisters, and she is also proud that I learned English so quickly. Before my time in the orphanage I never got to go to school, so I have been working hard to catch up with my age group. Mom thinks I’m really smart. I just hope that will help me accomplish all the things I dream about. The first on my list is becoming a flight attendant; I would like to travel the world. After that I might go to Spain to study photography or interior design. But I really want to do something like what mom does - but for boys. They deserve the same chance that we got. In the meantime though I spend my time figuring out what really matters in life, spending time with my sisters, and learning as much as I can - at the moment that includes hip hop, ballet, tap. I’m also drawn to world history, which is one of the reasons I would like to travel the world!
